Nelson Lakes National Park

March 2003

Greetings Everyone from No. 106:

It is hard to believe that 25% of 2003 has disappeared so quickly and it is time to go through the annual drama for the taxman once again. We have included the usual questionnaires with this newsletter, and it is important that you go through them carefully before bringing in your tax papers and business information to ensure that you are not leaving out any information which may be advantageous to you when it comes to minimising tax commitments.

It is difficult to predict what sort of a business year 2003/04 will be in light of the war in Iraq, which looks like being more protracted than anyone is prepared to admit, coupled with terrorist activity and now the new respiratory virus. Hopefully it can be kept out of New Zealand but I wouldn't like to take a wager on it. This sort of doom and gloom has continued to affect investment and superannuation trusts with exposure to overseas investments and the returns from this type of investment continue to be comparatively poor. Fixed interest rate investments with good returns are available in NZ and currently look more attractive so long as you ensure that they are also adequately secured. If you are not sure contact an investment broker to get the right advice. We do not profess to be experts in this field but can direct you to those who are if you have funds to invest on a longer term basis.

The past ten months have been very busy for me but it has been an enjoyable learning experience. It soon hits home very quickly that when making decisions the buck stops with you. Thank you to those clients of David Powell for staying with the practice after the changeover. I hope we have continued to provide the sort of service which you had come to expect. If we are falling below expectations in any areas please let me know because if we do not know we cannot fix it, and although a certain advertisement on television says "it's the putting right that counts" we don't want to get it wrong in the first place.

From my staff and myself we wish you a healthy, wealthy and rewarding year ahead.

Kind regards

Dave Hector
